Open & Affirming Statement
Adopted November 2014
"We, the congregation of Vine Congregational United Church of Christ in Lincoln, Nebraska, understand and believe that God creates humanity in a variety of blessed forms and that God calls this diversity "good". We observe that Jesus showed no partiality, ministering to all people.
As disciples of Jesus, we are called to restore justice wherever God's creation is broken or divided and to act as agents of reconciliation and wholeness within the world and within the church itself. All goals and objectives of the church are intended to increase each person's love of God and neighbor and self.
We acknowledge that persons who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, gender non-conforming and gender fluid have long been excluded, rejected, and dishonored by the church. We believe that God's love is for all the people and the doors of our church shall never be closed to anyone.
This declaration stands as our unyielding commitment to strive to be a congregation that includes all persons by embracing diversity of identity including (but not limited to) sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, intimate partner status, family make-up, age, mental and physical health and ability, racial and cultural identity and background, immigrant status, educational level, faith background, and socioeconomic status.
We welcome all to share in the life, leadership, ministry, spirit, fellowship, worship, sacraments, responsibilities, blessings, and joys of our congregation's life in Christ.
We solemnly pledge and vow that 'no matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here.'"
